What Is IVF?
In-vitro Fertilization, otherwise referred to as IVF, is the process of fertilizing a mother’s egg outside of her body before transferring an embryo to the womb. In short, it involves removing an egg, or eggs, from the mother’s uterus to fertilize with the father’s sperm before transplanting them into her or a surrogate’s womb.
What Does the IVF Procedure Involve?
Some women may begin IVF with a fertility medication to stimulate the production of eggs to increase chances of obtaining a successful pregnancy. Once the eggs are ready, they will be transferred from the mother’s ovaries to a secure, sterile location to be fertilized with the father’s sperm. Incubation takes a few days, during which time the embryos are monitored for growth until they can be planted into the uterus of the mother or surrogate.
What Are the Indications for IVF?
There are many reasons why a parent may turn to IVF to achieve pregnancy. Your doctor will discuss your needs and unique situation with you prior to determining whether this is the right fertility solution for you. In general, the procedure may be recommended for women and couples experiencing any of the following:
- Blocked or removed fallopian tubes
- Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)

IVF or ICSI?
Majority of our patients are recommended to do ICSI as it enables us to receive more quality embryos. Both of these procedures have similar rates and outcomes for achieving successful pregnancies, so neither is superior over the other, but one may be better suited for different situations.
The main difference between the two procedures is how the sperm is introduced to the egg. With IVF, the sperm and egg are added in a dish together and allowed to spontaneously fertilize. With ICSI, the sperm is directly injected into the egg with a tiny needle under a microscope. With either procedure, there is an incubation period to allow the embryo to mature before being transplanted.
